5 'A' Sided 45 - Rather Records, Gear Two 1978

Produced, arranged and played by Steve Treatment with (thinly disguised) members of Swell Maps! Engineered by Mike Kemp. Sleeve by Epic Soundtracks, Photograph by Nikki Sudden. Hand written inner sleeve listing Steve's favourite bands, adverts for Swell Maps etc! Every copy with the inner bag is different , some written by Steve others by the Maps. Some contained a competition slip as well. "Bolan was Stolen" engraved into vinyl run-out!

This is the one that Steve is best known for and it is an all time classic. Every song is a gem. Great sound - echoes everywhere and backwards guitars - you just feel how good a time they had recording it. The patter between songs and the general ambience makes this stand head and shoulders above it's contemporaries. This really rocks and the Bolanesque "Negative Nights" with Christine Isherwood's backing vocals is a classic!

Produced and arranged by Steve Treatment. Engineered by Doug. Recorded 5th Feb 1979.
Photocopied and folded sleeve.

Only TWO songs this time! Both great. "Worn Out Shoe" is classic Steve Treatment and "Heaven Knows" with its piano based sound is like later T Rex; only better!

5 songs again... "Change of Plan" is a POP classic, and so are the rest. Sloppy playing (in a good way!) more trademark backwards guitar, Bolanesque phrasing, grunts and sighs galore! Too good to be true in fact!

Steve Treatment & the NoMen - 2005 "A" Sided 45.
Topplers Records Top Ten 003 2005

Produced and arranged by Steve Treatment and the NoMen.
Recorded August/Sept 2005 at Topplers Home Studio and Steve's basement flat.

21" x 14" fold-out glossy sleeve. Black & White label "For more information, stare at the wall!"

5 songs again!!! ( six if you count the bonus track!) Has Steve mellowed with age? NO! This is still vibrant DIY punk-pop... The NoMen are the tightest band Steve has played with since the Swell Maps! Tracks range from short-sharp shocks to dreamy psychedelic trips! More backwards guitar, bontempi organ, vintage drum machines and general ramshackle weirdness... Still available from Topplers Records.

  •  VANISH
  • THE TREATMENT
  • DON'T DO IT
  • ECHO IN THE BACKSTREET
  • THE TEA WENT COLD
  • AARGH (bonus track)

Steve Treatment - Guitar & Vocal.

George NoMan, Cal NoMan, Allan NoMan, Brian NoMan and Billy NoMan play guitars, drums, organs etc and sing. Lana WoMan adds vocals to 'Echo in the Backstreet'

After a few unsuccesful attempts at getting Steve up to Scotland to record, Topplers records arranged a weekend session for the NoMen and Steve Treatment to record a 7"  single in early 2004. Tickets were bought for Steve to travel to Glasgow and beer and pizzas were bought in bulk for the planned session! An early morning call to confirm Steve was ready went unanswered and a later call proved that he hadn't made it! The driver of the National Express coach seemingly didn't let him on for having a massive carry out as his only luggage! Topplers went on to release The Decider 7" which featured some of the NoMen, then a single by Jowe Head from Swell Maps who had played guitar on Steve's first single. Steve's single came out in 2005 and the NoMen reverted to their tried and tested method of recording backing tracks and sending them to Steve in London to add vocals.

REVIEWS...

WIRE 272

Wow. How pleasant it is to know that Steve Treatment is still out there and recording.

His new one is a corker. With his mates, The NoMen, Mr Treatment shows he still has a strange and appealing handle on leftfield basement pop, although he seems a bit less relient on Marc Bolan as a spirit guide. Anyway, this is a great bowl of weevil from one of England's originals.

Steve Treatment & the No-Men 2005 'A' Sided 45 7" Late 70s DIY punk legend Steve Treatment is back with some Scots called the NoMen and WOW! is this good. Steve updates his T-Rex influenced sound without losing the magic heard in his three classic 7"s. Unlike a lot of "old timers," Steve Treatment hasn't lost it! A great combo of DIY punk, T-Rex, and psych.

Cassettes

THE TICKET INSPECTORS

Steve's band from the eighties. A slightly gentler sound on many of these tracks with bongos and flutes giving it a sixties psychedelic feel. These were limited edition home made cassettes with a mixture of studio and live recordings. There were many different versions with alternative photocopied covers available!  Many of the best tracks are on the Hyped 2 Death CD and the studio recordings are available online from Topplers records.

Steve Treatment - guitar and vocal.

Kozzie - Bass. Bongo Chris - percussion. Helen Webster - flute.

PICKED APART ON TAPE
Topplers Cassette Box Set TV001 [2012]

This was a labour of love from Topplers Records and only 12 copies of the cassette box tape were made! There were 4 cassettes with over 100 songs of just Steve and his acoustic guitar. These were taken from the original cassettes that Steve used to send to Topplers Records and many of these recordings became the basis of his more polished recordings with the NoMen. There were many unusual cover versions and a lot of songs that never saw the light of day anywhere else. The box set also had a CD with 'band' versions of some tracks plus a couple of rare unreleased Steve Treatment recordings and it included a large colour booklet with handwritten sleevenotes from Steve. A cut down version of the box set was also available from Topplers as a two CD set... The CD version is available to stream on Spotify.

THE TICKET INSPECTORS CASSETTE
Studio Recordings 1989 - 1994 [Topplers 2013]

A 36 minute cassette in a cardboard folded sleeve with printed insert.  In 2012 Topplers Records started a cassette only label using Steve Treatments cassette archive as a starting point and Steve came up with the slogan "Join The Campaign To Bring Back Hiss!"

This release put all the studio recordings by the Ticket Inspectors into one coherant album. A follow up album with live recordings was planned but didn't see the light of day.

Roscoe Vacant (with The NoMen & Steve Treatment)
[Topplers 2013]

15 minute cassette in wraparound card sleeve. Roscoe Vacant is a passionate folk/punk artist from Ayrshire, Scotland who is a huge fan of Steve Treatment. Topplers Records got him into the studio with The NoMen and they came up with three covers of Steves songs that are 100 miles removed from the sound of the originals! Steve joins in on the version of 'New Youth Society Generator' and the second side of the cassette is Steve on his own with some strange new compositions recorded in his London flat.

Compact Discs

Steve's seventies recordings have been released on many CD compilations mainly on the Hyped2Death series of Messthetics albums. Hyped2Death also released a double CDR of all Steve's recordings including The Ticket Inspectors and some later stuff from the nineties. This formed the basis of the 2015 Hyped2Death/Munster LP "All Dressed for Tomorrow" which is still available.

Topplers Records started working with Steve in 2003 and their early recordings were released as "Clear Visions of Grandeur" in 2005 as a limited edition CD. Other Toppler albums were released in small quantities on CDR. These included the original Picked Apart on Tape which was just Steve on acoustic guitar running through his new songs. This was later expanded into the four cassette box set of acoustic recordings. There were Christmas albums released each year since 2003, usually with the same tracks but adding that years new Christmas song.

"20 Golden Greats" was the best of Steve's recording with the NoMen on Topplers including his first releases from 2003 right up to his final recording from 2015.

Notes : From the Hyped To Death web site: 140 minutes of brilliant DIY'n'roll! Including all of Steve's singles (1977-1979), plus later highlights of his incredibly colourful career, including almost all of the songs that were headed for Steve's never-released LP.

"All my songs are 'A' sides." - S.T.

The NoMen - too obscure to be a Cult!

The NoMen are a band from Scotland who formed in 2003 to provide the backing for Steve Treatment's new recordings. Due to a variety of reasons Steve could not make the planned session but the NoMen, who had already recorded the music, went ahead and added their own vocals. Steve heard the recordings and was impressed, "You sound more like me than I do!

Topplers released the album as a limited edition CD and it gained favourable reviews. The NoMen and Steve eventually recorded together but never face-to-face, The band would record the basic track and Steve would do his vocals from home in London and send the tapes back to The NoMen to finish off. The Nomen have since done two other albums of Steves Songs "The Apprentice of Agnes Morehead" in 2009 and "Steve Treatment" in 2017.

The band have also produced a constant supply of their own material either on Topplers or on their own NoMen Records with a work ethic that involves producing at least two full albums a year plus singles, EPs and videos. They rarely, if ever, play live.

You can purchase many NoMen albums at their BandCamp page.
